California Dreams

For Chef Sally, that story began with a love of gathering people around a table. After studying culinary arts at College of the Desert and refining her craft through years of experience, Sally and her husband Martin opened Sweet Basil Bistro in the mountain community of Big Bear in 2007. Inspired by the simple, honest flavors of Tuscany and a lifelong passion for fresh, wholesome ingredients, Sally built a loyal following one meal at a time.

Eventually, the desert called her home. Having owned a home in Palm Desert for many years, Sally dreamed of bringing Sweet Basil to El Paseo. In 2020, amid the uncertainty of a global pandemic, Sweet Basil California Eatery opened its doors and quickly became a beloved gathering place known for creative comfort food, warm hospitality, and dishes that felt both familiar and inspired. From Lobster Lasagna and signature soups to seasonal specials and family favorites, every plate reflected Sally's belief that great food should nourish both body and soul.

Although the restaurant closed in May 2026, the recipes—and the memories they created—live on. This cookbook is Sally's invitation to bring Sweet Basil into your own kitchen, share it with the people you love, and continue the story one meal at a time.
